The Liturgy of the Word, as a principal element of the Mass, contains the sacred texts of Scripture, revealing God speaking to His people. As stated in the General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM),
Lectors are instituted to proclaim the readings from Scripture, with the exception of the Gospel. They may also announce the intentions for the general intercessions and, in the absence of the cantor of the psalms, read the psalm between readings.
A Lector is called to be a communicator and a story teller of the richness of God's love for his people.
The Lector Ministry calls for a person to grow in a warm and loving knowledge of Scripture, the living Word of God. He/she is invited to enter a relationship with a Word that is creative, powerful and effective.

Lectors at St. Martha's are scheduled once a month at the Mass of their preference in teams of two.
Training is provided by the Coordinator and a Lector's Workbook, with the readings for the liturgical year, along with history and pronunciations, is given to each Lector.
